Dwight Phillips jumps to second (8.08m/26-6.25).

The men's 400 Hurdles was strictly a two-man race - and fast. Bershawn Jackson and Kerron Clement took turns leading over hurdles 5, 6, 7 and 8, but Clement hit the ninth barrier and Jackson led by more than two metres coming off the tenth. It wasn't enough: Clement's sheer speed  (44.57 indoors) carried him past the 2005 World champion to win for the second straight year, finishing in 47.37 to Jackson's 47.48, the two fastest times of the year.  James Carter, the World silver medallist, was never in the race, and finished a distant third in 48.44.

The men's long jump was another three-way battle - among world and Olympic champion Dwight Phillips, defending U.S. champion Miguel Pate, and Brian Johnson - but the marks weren't as dazzling because the jumpers were facing a headwind. Johnson third-round jump of 8.10 (-1.7) proved just enough to edge Phillips 8.08 (-2.5), with Pate's 7.96 (-0.2). The location of the runway and pit, just a couple of metres from the grandstand, made it especially exciting for the fans.
Rose Richmond has been hovering near the top of the U.S. women's Long Jump list, and she made it to the top today. She took the lead with her third jump of 6.84m (PB), raised it to 6.93m (+2.2) on her fourth, and was a clear winner over World champion Tianna Madison's 6.77m w and Grace Upshaw's 6.65m. Richmond said, happily, "things finally came together."

Results 11th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics, Moscow 2006 Russia
Men's 4x400m Relay Round One. Like the Russians in the women's event, the U.S. arrived in Moscow as the heavy favorites in the men's 4x400, a position solidified by their World Indoor record* of 3:01.96 in Fayetteville early last month. After a dominating, if relaxed 3:03.66 win in their heat, the American squad looks virtually unstoppable as they chase their sixth title in the event. James Davis (46.44), Obra Hogans (45.73), Tyree Washington (45.57), and Wallace Spearmon (45.92) finished nearly two-and-a-half seconds clear of Poland, the champions in 2001, who clocked 3:06.10. Further behind, Sweden was third and will move on to the final as well after their 3:07.10 national record. It was a substantial improvement for the Swedes, whose previous national best was 3:10.09 set in 2002.
The result of men's 4x400m relay final was hardly surprising. The United States quartet powered to a commanding 3:03.24 win, more than a second ahead of Poland who clocked a notably brisk 3:04.67. The Americans, never challenged, won their sixth title in the event, while Poland, the champions in 2001, claimed their second silver. Dmitriy Petrov anchored the Russian squad, the runners-up in 2004, to a surprise third place finish. They reached the line in 3:06.91.

As a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Florida, Clement shocked the track world in winning the 2005 NCAA Indoor 400m title in 44.57 seconds, which shattered the great Michael Johnson's world record of 44.63 set on March 4, 1995. Clement then anchored Florida's 4x400m relay team to the NCAA indoor title in a collegiate record time of 3:03.51, which bettered the previous standard held by Baylor University (3:03.96) from 2004.
Clement won 23 events in 2005 including relays, and captured the NCAA Outdoor 400m hurdles title in 47.56 seconds. Named the U.S. Track Coaches Association Indoor Track Athlete of t he Year, Clement won six NCAA All-America honors in 2005.

Results Tyson Invitational Fayetteville, Arkansas USA
The U.S. squad of Kerron Clement, Wallace Spearmon, Darold Williamson and Jeremy Wariner capped the second day of the Tyson Invitational with a World indoor record of 3:01.96* in the 4 x 400m relay. The quartet eclipsed the previous mark of 3:02.83 set by Andre Morris, Dameon Johnson, Deon Minor And Milton Campbell with their win at the 1997 World Indoor Championships in Maebashi, Japan.
"Yesterday was a challenge. Today was just like icing on the cake," said Spearmon, who set a World best of 31.88 in the 300m on Friday evening. "With guys like this you really don't have a choice but to break a world record. Darold and Jeremy have done it for the last four years. We had Kerron on the team, he was a great guy to add. So I was the weakest link. It kind of felt like I was along for the ride."
Leading off with Clement, the indoor World record holder in the 400m, the team got off to a fast start. Moving to the inside lane, Clement cruised down the back stretch and held on to a four-step lead against the field before handing off to Spearmon, completing his leg of the relay in 46.1 seconds. Spearmon charged around the first turn to the cheers of his howetown crowd and opened up a sizeable lead on the field through the opening 200 meters. Continuing to press his advantage, Spearmon, the novice 400m runner of the group, split 45.94 before handing to Williamson. The anchor leg of Team USA's 2004 Olympic gold-medal relay, Williamson took the baton and extended his team's advantage around with a 45.18 split. Wariner, the Olympic and World 400m champion, took the baton for the final two laps. Coming around the final bend the clock read 2:55, it was a race against the clock. Splitting 44.74, Wariner secured the record. "They set me up with a great time,"
Wariner said. "They gave me enough time to work with it. I just ran my usual race that I usually do. Coach (Clyde) Hart was telling me before the race to not try and force it and to run my own race. He said enjoy myself. I wasn't trying to force the record. If it came it came. If it didn't, oh well we are young we can do it another year. I was just out there to run my race and see what I could do right now." When asked about his feeling coming down the final stretch with the world record in sight, Wariner said, "That is usually how I run my races. I have a good kick at the end. My training has been great so far, so I came out a little stronger than I thought I was going to be able to. I was just worried about keeping my form the rest of the race."
